KERMIT—Ursuline Sister Janet Peterworth was honored by both Gov. Joe Manchin and ABLE (Affirming, Believing, Learning, Educating) Families, which she headed for the past 15 years. “I’m honored to receive this,” said Sister Peterworth, who recently retired from her position, “but there have been plenty of great people who have worked at ABLE Families over the years, helping to do all we did, that earned it. It’s for all of us.” At the same event, Barry Hudock, the new director of ABLE Families, announced that the agency was creating the Sister Janet Peterworth Scholarship Fund, which will award money each year to a local person in financial need who is pursuing a college education. The money to create the new fund came from personal contributions by the agency’s board members. “We’re moving forward, building on all that ABLE Families has achieved,” Hudock said. “This new scholarship fund fits perfectly with ABLE Families’ mission, because the best way to get out and stay out of poverty is to get a good education. It’s also a great way to honor the remarkable work that Sister Janet has done here.” The celebration was attended by many longtime supporters and friends of the agency. A representative from the office of Congressman Nick Rahall offered remarks, passing along Rahall’s praise and gratitude for the agency’s work. |
